Constraining the Contribution of Hydrothermal Iron to Southern Ocean Export Production Using Deep Ocean Iron Observations

نویسندگان

چکیده

Hydrothermal iron supply contributes to the Southern Ocean carbon cycle via regulation of regional export production. However, as hydrothermal input estimates are coupled helium, which uncertain depending on whether helium inputs based ridge spreading rates or inverse modelling, questions remain regarding magnitude production impacts. A particular challenge is limited observations dissolved (dFe) from abyssal system directly assess different scenarios. We combine ocean biogeochemical modelling with new dFe impact estimated either rate The contribution in upper 250 m reduces 4–5 fold when relative those rate, translating into a 36–73% reduction only scheme reproduces observed anomalies >1 nM around circum-Antarctic ridge. model correlation drops 3 under scheme. best scenario has residence time for that between 21 and 34 years, highlighting importance rapid physical mixing surface waters. Overall, because its short time, Fe supplied locally by ridges most important our results highlight decoupling supply.

The Southern Ocean biological response to aeolian iron deposition.

Biogeochemical rate processes in the Southern Ocean have an important impact on the global environment. Here, we summarize an extensive set of published and new data that establishes the pattern of gross primary production and net community production over large areas of the Southern Ocean. We compare these rates with model estimates of dissolved iron that is added to surface waters by aerosols...

Distal transport of dissolved hydrothermal iron in the deep South Pacific Ocean.

Until recently, hydrothermal vents were not considered to be an important source to the marine dissolved Fe (dFe) inventory because hydrothermal Fe was believed to precipitate quantitatively near the vent site. Based on recent abyssal dFe enrichments near hydrothermal vents, however, the leaky vent hypothesis [Toner BM, et al. (2012) Oceanography 25(1):209-212] argues that some hydrothermal Fe ...

Saccharides enhance iron bioavailability to Southern Ocean phytoplankton.

Iron limits primary productivity in vast regions of the ocean. Given that marine phytoplankton contribute up to 40% of global biological carbon fixation, it is important to understand what parameters control the availability of iron (iron bioavailability) to these organisms. Most studies on iron bioavailability have focused on the role of siderophores; however, eukaryotic phytoplankton do not p...

Remote sensing observations of ocean physical and biological properties in the region of the Southern Ocean Iron Experiment (SOFeX)

[1] Satellite remote sensing estimates of surface chlorophyll, temperature, wind speed, and sea ice cover are examined in the region of the Southern Ocean Iron Experiment (SOFeX). Our objectives are to place SOFeX into a regional context and highlight regional mesoscale spatial and monthly temporal variability. SOFeX fertilized two patches with iron, one south of the Antarctic Polar Front (PF) ...
